BRET DIRKS, M.D.
Dr. Bret Dirks, MD is renowned in his field, having practiced neurosurgery in the Inland Northwest for over 25 years. He graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1988, and completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1994. Dr. Dirks is Board Certified in Neurological Surgery, and performs surgery at Northwest Specialty Hospital in Post Falls, ID.
Having been raised in Moscow, ID and practicing neurosurgery in North Idaho for over two decades, he thoroughly understands the folks who live in our region. This makes it that much easier to establish a comfortable relationship with Dr. Dirks.
Dr. Dirks believes that the relationship between patient and physician must be one of comfort and trust. He feels that patients should never be talked “at”, but rather be talked “to” and educated about their issues in a way that puts them at ease. Dr. Dirks’ goal for his practice is to create an environment of collaboration and open discussion. Rather than being treated like a “condition” and having confusing medical language thrown at them, patients quickly find that they are having an educational conversation with a genuinely good person. Dr. Dirks and staff are focused on guiding patients through the entire process of their care, and want to make the experience as smooth as possible.
Dr. Dirks’ dedication to his patients has earned him the Vitals award for Compassionate Doctor Recognition, and also the Patient’s Choice Award. In addition, he has been selected as a Regional Top Doctor. He also has a genuine passion for community service, both locally and worldwide. He leads the annual Helmet Clinic, an educational event aimed at bringing awareness about helmet safety and head injuries. In addition, he and his family have organized and led multiple volunteer missions to Honduras in order to provide much needed aid and supplies to the people of that region.
